WomenKonnect Kicked off with its first in the Series workshop today at Ogudu Senior Secondary Grammar School.

WomenKonnect is an initiative put together by Equinox ICT Solutions and Development Alternatives for Women and Adolescents

WomenKonnect goes to Secondary Schools in Lagos!

WomenKonnect is preparing to take off Sensitization programmes for Secondary School Girls in October 2008.During this workshops,girls would be sensitized on the gender digital divide,and they would be encouraged to participate more in ICTs.It has been discovered that most girls do not show interest in Technology because they believe it is a male domain.

Mentoring young girls is a way to assist them in finding their feet and overcoming all forms of discrimination that they may face in the ICTs field

The overall aim of this programme is to identify those girls who would like to build a career in ICTs,so as to be able to mentor and assist them in planning thier future career wise.

The first of the series of workshop will take place at Ogudu Senior Grammar School,Ogudu GRA Lagos.

Information and communication technologies could give a major boost to the economic, political
and social empowerment of women, and the promotion of gender equality. But that potential will only be realized if the gender dimensions of the Information Society – in terms of users’ needs,
conditions of access, policies, applications and regulatory frameworks – are properly understood and adequately addressed by all stakeholders.

Poverty, illiteracy, lack of computer literacy and language barriers are among the factors impeding access to the ICT infrastructure, especially
in developing countries, and these problems are particularly acute for women.

Also, cultural attitudes and gender stereotyping are impediments to education leading to more men than women in scientific and technical careers and in decision-making positions, thus increasing gender inequity.

The holistic new ICT technologies are powerful tools for women to overcome discrimination, achieve full equality, well-being and participation in the decisions that determine their lives and the future of their communities. It will be a highly valuable reference tool for policy makers and development leaders, so that appropriate steps can be taken to mainstream the gender dimension in all areas of technology development, incubation and adoption.

Community-based women’s organizations have been instrumental in the process of enabling women to cross the so-called digital divide and become leaders in the ICT sector. With women’s empowerment as a key objective, they can use technology to successfully build personal confidence and self-esteem thereby developing leadership qualities......MORE

Bridging the Gender Digital Divide through WomenKonnect!

Information and communications technologies (ICTs) are becoming widely accepted as integral means for transforming the path of development. As envisaged in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the importance of harnessing information and communication technologies for poverty eradication cannot be overemphasized.
Yet, as statistics describing the growing digital divide demonstrate, women and girls are at particular risk for exclusion from opportunities presented by ICT to secure better livelihoods and other rights.
The particular opportunities presented by ICT as means to foster women's economic security and rights in Africa, while being tested on a small scale in the region, remain largely untapped. Constraints of infrastructure, cost and content as well as gender biases in the use and development of ICT constitute significant barriers to use for most individual entrepreneurs or micro- enterprises.

Equinox ICT Solutions has a commitment to bridge the wide Gender gap in the use of ICTs through WomenKonnect.
